Attack narrative

When imported, the package calls AWS metadata endpoints for IAM and instance data. It also copies the complete process environment and recursively reads Kubernetes secret files. The results are POSTed to a hard-coded external exporter, exposing credentials and sensitive deployment data without a user-facing activation or destination restriction.

AI rationale

This is active import-time credential and secret exfiltration to an unrelated hard-coded endpoint. The absence of an install hook does not mitigate the malicious runtime behavior.

On module load, index.js unconditionally contacts the EC2 Instance Metadata Service at 169.254.169.254, obtains an IMDSv2 token, and retrieves instance identity, user-data, and all IAM role temporary security credentials from /iam/security-credentials/. It also enumerates every entry of process.env and recursively reads files under /var/run/secrets/ (Kubernetes service-account tokens and mounted secrets). The collected data is POSTed as JSON to the hardcoded attacker-controlled endpoint https://hrnmn.dd.h4x.tv/save_instance_info_from_pkge_hrmony_benefit-mobilitaet, whose path names the package explicitly and functions as a dependency-confusion beacon. The manifest carries an empty description, placeholder author 'kuhuna', and a single dependency @hrmony/kit-5 in a scope resembling an internal 'harmony' namespace, matching the dependency-confusion attack pattern. ## Source: ghsa-malware (a910285b5f2a283e301891885598f2cb76e1f8fa903188b999457e4ae1d71d2d) Any computer that has this package installed or running should be considered fully compromised. All secrets and keys stored on that computer should be rotated immediately from a different computer. The package should be removed, but as full control of the computer may have been given to an outside entity, there is no guarantee that removing the package will remove all malicious software resulting from installing it.
