A normal makeWASocket user connection triggers a delayed hidden auto-subscription routine. The remote list controls which newsletters the authenticated WhatsApp account follows and mutes.

Attack narrative

The default socket stack includes newsletter.js. On every successful connection, it waits 30 seconds, fetches a package-author-controlled list, and follows then mutes each listed newsletter using the user's authenticated WhatsApp session. This is concealed account-state manipulation unrelated to the requested socket operation.

Rationale

The hidden, remote-controlled account modification is concrete runtime behavior, not a scanner-only similarity signal. The install hook itself is benign, but normal package use activates the malicious routine.
